It's so scared that the audience will get bored that a chunk of the narrative the part where the hero heals is summed up by a bunch of still frames. This movie is a wild, "bad-but-entertaining" watch that definitely adheres to most of the tenets of a "good" kung fu flick for me. Frankly, I'm surprised it has such a high rating on here compared to other kung fu flicks that does so many things better than it, IMO.
Wang Yu's first 'One Armed Boxer' delivers non-stop over the top action and creative, insane fights at a break-arm speed that's hard to top. Both this and the sequel 'Master of the Flying Guillotine' belong to the coolest martial arts movies out there, and make actor-director Jimmy Wang Yu not only one of the pivotal stars of Hong Kong action in front of, but also behind the camera.
For this directorial effort, he went outside his comfort zone by instead playing a one-armed boxer. He loses his arm about 50 minutes into this movie, about a kung-fu school whose members run afoul of an evil gang.
From there, he trains his one arm to be super strong, to the point where he can do one-fingered handstands. No, Jimmy does not do all his own stunts here, but that doesn't matter. These are the main contours of the plot, in a film that is mostly devoted to goofy and occasionally bloody fight scenes.
Man, these non-Shaw Bros. Left without an arm after a bloody battle, he must learn the skill of one-arm boxing to avenge his master. Lean as hell.
Filled to the brim with top notch fighting. An action packed road to revenge.
