Best game franchises

Since its debut as a WW2 shooter, Call of Duty has taken us to almost every warzone of the past century… and even beyond. Consider us stoked. The sci-fi space saga continues having a devout fanbase despite some of its more recent missteps. If only Square Enix would give us a date for Kingdom Hearts 3, this would probably be even higher on the list.

One of the most revered fighting games ever made, Street Fighter sets the bar for one-on-one competition in the video game world. While innovations like combos and supers have enhanced the series over the years, the core gameplay remains largely unchanged and the cast of characters are still familiar.

Good thing, too. The original game, set in the crusades, was a novel piece of brilliance, blending history, open-world parkour, hand-to-hand combat and a terrific story told through great looking cut-scenes. When Ezio was introduced and the series jumped to the Renaissance, we were impressed.

Samus Aran is one of the first female video game heroes and her adventures battling Mother Brain, among others, have stolen plenty of hours from us over the years. The original Final Fantasy game featured many of the things that have become pillars of the series in the games that followed, including random enemy encounters, towns replete with shops and inns, and unlockable vehicles to further explore the world map. With storylines that are often equal parts epic and emotional, exemplary turn-based RPG mechanics, and memorably colorful characters, this series appears to be a glaring omission from the list of the ten best RPGs ever made.

Featuring characters from the Mario series, players race against A. Though some gamers want their racing game to feature photorealistic depictions of real-life vehicles, many more would apparently rather see Baby Peach launching Spiny Shells from a turbo-powered baby carriage.

This turn-based action role-playing series was created by developer Game Freak and publisher Nintendo. Set in the cartoonish and magical land of the Mushroom Kingdom, the player takes control of Mario, an Italian plumber who must rescue Princess Peach from the evil King Koopa, Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros. The fact that those basic movements are the backbone of a franchise that has been quintessential to gaming for three and a half decades is an astonishing testament to the series' peerless design. Superb platforming gameplay, fun power-ups, creative and progressively challenging levels, and a wealth of secret locations to discover make each sequel as joyful to play as the last.

This fantasy action-adventure series was created by developer Nintendo EAD and publisher Nintendo, though the games have been developed by a number of developers including Capcom, Grezzo, and Nintendo EPD since Set in the fictional Kingdom of Hyrule, players control a Hylian named Link and must find all the pieces of the Triforce to defeat the malicious Ganon and save Princess Zelda.

There is perhaps no other video game franchise more universally adored by fans and critics alike as The Legend of Zelda. The fifth game in the series, The Ocarina of Time , is the highest-rated video game on Metacritic with a rating of 99, a score so impressive that it borders on ostentatiousness. Shawn has co-written and co-produced numerous plays, one of which was featured at the Ottawa Fringe Festival.

He has also worked as a ghostwriter, but by definition, he can't prove it. Shawn enjoys discovering engaging stories, whether they be from movies, video games, books, or any other form in which they may be told. Chock full of over-the-top and occasionally problematic characters that could teleport, levitate and conjure up energy blasts out of thin air, the quick and frantic 1v1 battles headlined by Ryu and Ken not only helped to define the concept of fighting games but also drained you of every last quarter you owned.

More than any other Nintendo Switch game, Breath of the Wild is the one which helped catapult the console to levels of uber-popularity, so it should come as no surprise that people are still obsessively playing it 3. What unites all these games is its recurring philosophical approach inside and outside the game: grandiose narrative themes of power, corruption, injustice and the effect of technology on the natural world, along with an always-innovative approach to party-based battle systems which set the standard for all JRPGs that followed and made Final Fantasy into one of the best video game franchises.

Thanks to its seemingly unlimited budget and over-the-top production value, each entry in the series was more epic than the next. And while that ambition has led to a few noticeable missteps, every release since Final Fantasy VII has been nothing short of a singular event in the gaming world. Commercially, Mario games have generated more revenue than any other franchise and critically they have changed the face of gaming many times over, none more so than Super Mario Even if you disregard the spinoff series here, which include Mario Kart, Paper Mario, Mario Sports and the Yoshi games, and the Mario franchise would only be topped in sales by Tetris and Pokemon.
